Student Involvement

MIDC offers many opportunities for students from various areas of study to perform out-of-office research with MIDC staff and attorneys available for support and collaboration.

For students that have access to meet in Portland occasionally, potential opportunities include observing court with an MIDC supervisor, participating in policy and development related meetings, and special projects dependent upon students’ interests. Completely remote research and project work is also available.

Internships are available as part-time semester work or a summer internship for undergraduate or graduate students and for Colby students as a Jan Plan. Externships are available for UMaine Law students. Faculty is encouraged to reach out to collaborate with MIDC on course projects. Students have the opportunity to work on individual projects as well as collaborate with other students in or out of their course or school. Field placements are also available for MSW students. Site supervision is provided by MIDC staff and attorneys, offering students the opportunity to learn about advocacy, policy development, research, and cultivate an understanding of how legal services and social services support and supplement each other.
